Stay Safe While Traveling Abroad

Traveling to distant lands and experiencing different cultures is a rewarding endeavor. It is, however, physically demanding and, at times, dangerous. To guarantee your safety during international trips, it is important to use common sense and exercise caution.

According to the U.S. Department of State, “Safety begins when you pack.” This means you should “avoid being a target, dress conservatively.  Don’t wear expensive-looking jewelry.  A flashy wardrobe or one that is too casual can mark you as a tourist.  As much as possible, avoid the appearance of affluence.”

Another good tip is to make two photocopies of your passport identification page, airline tickets, driver’s license and the credit cards that you plan to bring with you.  Leave one photocopy of this data with family or friends at home; pack the other in a place separate from where you carry your valuables.

The Department of State’s Consular Information Sheets are available for every country of the world.  They describe entry requirements, currency regulations, unusual health conditions, the crime and security situation, political disturbances, areas of instability, and special information about driving and road conditions.

It is important to gather general safety tips as those given above as well as advice for safe travel in specific destinations. Some of the most popular destinations that require special caution are Brazil, China, India and Russia.

While the odds are in favor that you will have a safe trip, it is wise to be prepared. Knowledge of possible risks can help you minimize the chances of your becoming a victim and increase your chances of a safe and memorable journey.
